Rather than trying to solve the water shortage through conservation, some radical entrepreneurs are doing something ingenious — making more of it.
For example: The PlayPump
There’s clean water under the ground in Africa; it just takes the right pumping mechanism to get it out. That’s where PlayPump comes in. The nonprofit identifies a borehole near a school or a village, then installs a simple pump capable of extracting water from more than three hundred feet down and powers it with a merry-go-round. The faster the ride is spun, the more water is sent to the tank — as much as 370 gallons an hour. That’s enough for about twenty-five hundred people. With plans to donate four thousand systems in ten countries, PlayPump expects to be providing water for ten million people by 2010.
